Putin vows ‘significant’ response to ‘Europe’s militarization

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday warned of a “significant” and swift response to what he termed the “rising militarisation of Europe,” accusing Western powers of increasing threats against Russia.
The remarks, delivered at a foreign policy forum in southern Russia, underscore Moscow’s growing alarm over NATO expansion and increased military aid to Ukraine.
“We are closely monitoring the rising militarisation of Europe,” Putin told the audience, which included diplomats and foreign policy experts. He added, “Retaliatory measures by Russia will not take long. The response to such threats will be very significant.”
Putin’s statement comes amidst a backdrop of escalating tensions between Russia and the West. European nations, particularly those bordering Russia and Ukraine, have significantly increased their defense spending and military readiness since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Several countries have also provided extensive military and financial aid to Ukraine, which Moscow views as a direct threat to its security interests.
NATO Expansion and Defense Spending
The Russian president specifically pointed to:
NATO expansion: The recent inclusion of Finland and Sweden into NATO, which has significantly extended the alliance’s border with Russia.
Increased defense spending: Many European nations have committed to raising their defense budgets, often exceeding the 2% of GDP target set by NATO.
Deployment of advanced weaponry: The transfer of long-range missile systems, tanks, and fighter jets to Ukraine and the strengthening of NATO’s eastern flank.
While Putin did not detail what “significant” retaliatory measures would entail, Russian officials have previously hinted at various responses, including deploying new missile systems, strengthening military districts bordering NATO countries, and adjusting naval capabilities.
